A legend's back!

Tribe records founder Doug Hammond is offering 10 new songs after 20 years of silence.

Doug Hammond is an African American drummer and singer who started his career at the beginning of the sixties, playing with Earl Hooker, Little Willie John (“Fever” composer) or Sam and Dave. Moving to Detroit in 1965, then to New York in the late 60s, he played with Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Betty Carter, Nina Simone, Arthur Blythe, and James Blood Ulmer among many others. In the early 70s he recorded with Charles Mingus (Moves), Lonnie Liston Smith (Cosmic Funk) and started his independent productions with the mythical Reflections in a Sea of Nurnen on Tribe records. Living mostly in Europe for the last 30 years, he recorded landmark world percussions albums with the Family of Percussion at the turn of the 70s, and a few great albums in the US for his own Idibib label. One of them, Spaces, features a young Steve Coleman, who considers Doug as one of his mentors and an inspirator for the M-Base concepts. This album is the first studio recording in 20 years and showcases Doug's musical art and poetry on a spiritual jazz vibe with guest appearance from pianist Kirk Lightsey.
